14 Use the remaining two pieces of pastel paper as endpaper. Center and adhere them inside the covers. They will cover up the mess.

FAUX POSTAGE AND ARTISTS’ STAMPS

The term faux postage describes miniature pieces of simple art in the shape and style of postage stamps. Artists’ stamps, also called artistamps, are similar to faux postage but are more complex and look less like real postage. As I understand the law, its illegal to create something that could be mistaken for real postage. When designing stamps, remember that not everyone is observant. Design something that cannot be mistaken for an official stamp.

Faux postage often has a name; mine is LaPlantz Post. It can also have the name of a fantasy country and an unusual denomination, such as 49 cents. Artists’ stamps allow you to use your imagination; they’re not meant to look like real postage. They can be fun, quick formats for exploring graphic design, typography, color schemes, or illustration techniques. You can create something that is a combination of both techniques; since these are new media, there hasn’t been much time to develop a vocabulary and definitions.

Gummed paper for stamps is available at wholesale office paper supply stores, or check with your local printer. Your printer might also have a perforator, but its unlikely. Preperforated gummed paper is also available, but it’s difficult to find. Check with rubber stamp stores in your area to see if they carry it. It’s more likely that you’ll have to turn to a big rubber stamp company to find it. Rubber stamp stores usually carry rubber stamps shaped like the outlines of postage. It’s also possible to make dotted lines on an illustration using a computer program, and design inside the dots.

Faux postage and artists’ stamps are great images to put on pages, inside tunnels, and behind windows. They are a fun piece of lagniappe (a French word for “a little something extra”). Design one for each new book and send them out with the book. They can even be sent out as advertising for a business, event, or anything else you want to let people know about.
